DG’s B&B ALWAYS BORROWS FROM THE BEST

Coach Seth Godin Says:

Emerging is when you use a platform to come into your own.

Merging is when you sacrifice who you are to become part of something else.

Merging is what the system wants from you.

To give up your dreams and your identity to further the goals of the system. Managers push for employees to merge into the organization.

Emerging is what a platform and support and leadership allow you to do. Emerging is what we need from you.

Substitute wrestling for emerging and basketball for merging and it hits the mark.

Wrestling is when you use a platform to come into your own.

The platform is the podium. It’s where you go after the journey deep into your own heart of darkness where doubt and fear trys cheating you out of what you’ve worked for, except you prevail and share your story…

From your platform.

Practice raising your arms straight up from your sides so you don’t accidentally whack the second and third place guys you beat.

They already feel bad enough.

Basketball is when you sacrifice who you are to become part of something else.

What would that be? A team featuring one player who calls for the ball, never passes, and misses their long shots?

A team where an ineligible player costs a season of wins because the athletic department failed to check on class hours.

Or a team built around a new guy who won’t run, won’t lift, and talks too much.

But he’s tall.

Basketball is what the system wants from you.

System? A system costs money. Money-generating sports feed the system. Basketball generates money, and costs a lot of money.

Football even more.

Wrestling is in the system even if colleges keep dropping programs. Money keeps them in the system. T. Boone Pickens is the Oklahoma State money-man who likes wrestling.

It’s a beautiful match.

To give up your dreams and your identity to further the goals of the system. Managers push for employees to merge into the organization.

What is the ‘organization’ of the system? AAU basketball leagues? Clinics and camps and skills competition?

If you show well, if a college coach sees what he’s looking for, boom, scholarship. The sport system hangs it out for higher education.

Wrestling camps and clinics introduce athletes to the same decision makers, except they are also the most fierce looking people most kids have ever seen.

That’s what you get when the top guy finishes college undefeated, wins Olympic goal, takes a college team to the top, then comes back seven years later to pound everyone in his weight class.

Even better, he cuts weight to make room for guys he coached.

Wrestling is what a platform and support and leadership allow you to do. Wrestling is what we need from you.

Sometimes Coach Godin’s words don’t need a thing.
